Download a Europass CV
Europass is a standardized CV format maintained by the European Union, designed to make qualifications and experience comparable across EU member states. It's a specific template with fixed sections — not just "a European-style CV."
When you actually need Europass
Europass is typically required (not just preferred) for:
- EU institution and agency job applications
- Many public-sector roles within EU member states
- Some EU-funded programs, grants, and exchange applications (including academic mobility programs)
For a standard private-sector job application, even within the EU, a well-formatted standard CV usually works better than Europass — most private employers find the Europass format rigid and dated compared to a modern template.
What makes Europass different
- Fixed section order and headers you can't rearrange
- A distinctive visual style that's immediately recognizable as Europass
- Fields for language proficiency using the CEFR scale (A1–C2), which isn't standard on other CV formats
- Available in every official EU language through the official Europass platform
If you don't need Europass
If the job posting doesn't explicitly require it, a standard modern CV will generally represent you better — more flexible layout, more room to highlight achievements, and no assumption from the reader that you're applying to public-sector or EU-institution roles specifically.
