ATS-friendly resume: a practical 2026 checklist

An applicant tracking system (ATS) stores applications and helps employers organize or search them. Different systems behave differently, so no template can honestly guarantee an “ATS score” or an interview. The practical goal is simpler: make your résumé clear, text-based and relevant.

Quick answer: use standard section names, readable text, consistent dates and the language of the vacancy. Avoid hiding essential information inside images. Submit the file type the employer requests.

ATS-friendly checklist

  • Use familiar headings such as Work Experience, Education and Skills.
  • Write employer names, job titles and dates as real text.
  • Use the vacancy's terminology where it accurately describes your experience.
  • Include common abbreviations together with the full term when useful, for example “Search Engine Optimization (SEO)”.
  • Keep the contact details outside decorative graphics.
  • Avoid keyword stuffing; every skill should be supported by experience or evidence.
  • Check that copied text remains selectable in the exported PDF.

What ATS-friendly does not mean

It does not mean removing all design, using invisible keywords or copying the entire job description. Recruiters still read the document. A clear visual hierarchy and concise evidence help both people and software.

How to tailor without rewriting everything

  1. Highlight the required skills and responsibilities in the vacancy.
  2. Choose the requirements you genuinely meet.
  3. Move the most relevant evidence into the summary and first few experience bullets.
  4. Remove generic claims that do not add proof.
  5. Save a separate version for the role and proofread the exported file.

File format
