How to Dress for a Job Interview

Interview outfits don't need to be expensive or formal by default — they need to match the role, the company culture, and the format of the interview. Getting this right removes one more variable so the conversation can focus on you, not your outfit.

Read the company before you pick the outfit

A law firm, a marketing agency, and a warehouse operations role have three different dress codes, and none of them are guesswork. Check the company's careers page photos, LinkedIn posts, or ask the recruiter directly — "is there a dress code I should know for the interview?" is a completely normal question and never counts against you.

The safe default when you're not sure

One step above the company's daily dress code is the standard rule. For office and corporate roles: a blazer or structured top, tailored trousers or a knee-length skirt, and closed-toe shoes. For manual, retail, or hospitality roles: clean, well-fitting clothes in neutral colors — no logos, no visible wear, no strong scent.

Video interviews have their own rules

Solid colors read better on camera than small patterns or stripes, which can flicker. Dress the same as you would in person from the waist up — recruiters do sometimes ask you to stand. Check your camera framing and lighting a few minutes before the call, not during it.

Three things that undo a good outfit

  • Wrinkled or visibly worn clothing — it reads as low effort regardless of the outfit itself.
  • Strong perfume or cologne — distracting in a small room, and a dealbreaker for anyone with sensitivities.
  • Anything you have to keep adjusting during the interview. If you're tugging at a collar or shoe, it's the wrong choice for today.

Get the rest of the application right too

The outfit gets you through the door; the motivation letter and resume get you the interview in the first place. If the interview goes well, follow up with a thank-you letter within 24 hours.
