Return-to-work CV: explain a career break and show what you offer now
Returning after parental leave, caring responsibilities, study or another break does not erase your previous experience. Use accurate dates, give a short explanation where helpful and focus on the relevant skills you can use today.
Quick answer: keep your work history truthful, describe recent relevant learning or projects and explain the break briefly if you choose. You do not need to publish detailed private medical or family information in your CV.

Three parts to review
- Earlier experience: keep the role, employer and dates correct. Emphasise tasks relevant to the vacancy.
- Recent evidence: add real training, a placement, volunteering or a project if it helps explain your current skills.
- The break: a short, neutral explanation is often enough. Do not invent employment to fill the timeline.
Brief wording examples
- “Career break for family caring responsibilities, 2022–2025.”
- “Career break, 2024–2025; completed an introductory spreadsheet course before returning to work.”
- “Full-time study, 2023–2025; completed a diploma in business administration.”
These are fictional wording examples. Use a statement only if its dates and facts match your situation. Choosing a writing prompt does not publish a career-break label automatically.

How to prepare it in IQResume
- Choose “Returning after a career break” in the writing helper.
- Enter previous work with its actual end dates. A career break is not an employer.
- Add recent courses in Certificates or Education, making their level clear.
- If you want to explain the break, use Additional information. Do not add health or family details you do not wish to share.
- Run the local checks and inspect the final preview for gaps, dates and wording. The checks do not judge your employment history or eligibility.
Must I include the reason for every gap?
Provide honest information requested by the employer. For a general CV, decide what brief context is useful and what personal detail you are comfortable sharing. Requirements vary by application and country.
Can caring responsibilities count as a paid job?
Do not present unpaid personal responsibilities as employment. If you discuss transferable skills, explain their context accurately.
Should I hide older experience?
Keep relevant experience and make it concise. Recent learning can show current skills, but does not replace the need for accurate work dates.
