Accountant Resume Example

Accounting resumes are judged on precision — the same standard you're hired to apply to numbers should show up in your own document. Quantify every result, and list certifications exactly as they appear (CPA, CMA, or in-progress).

Example experience section

Staff Accountant — Mid-Size Manufacturing Firm (2021–Present)

  • Managed monthly close for a $12M revenue entity, reducing close time from 8 days to 5
  • Reconciled 200+ vendor accounts monthly with a 99.8% accuracy rate
  • Identified $45,000 in duplicate vendor payments through a quarterly audit process

Skills recruiters check for

CPA status or progress, accounting software (QuickBooks, SAP, NetSuite), reconciliation and close-cycle experience, Excel proficiency (pivot tables, VLOOKUP), and GAAP or IFRS familiarity depending on region.

Common mistakes on an accountant resume

Writing "detail-oriented" as a stand-alone claim instead of demonstrating it through a specific reconciliation or audit result. Leaving out entity size or revenue scope, which tells a hiring manager immediately whether your experience matches the complexity of their books. Listing every software package you've ever opened instead of the two or three you're genuinely proficient in.
