Common Resume Problems (and How to Fix Them)

Most resumes fail for the same handful of fixable reasons. Below are the eight that come up most often when recruiters explain why a resume didn't advance, with a concrete fix for each.

Responsibilities instead of results

"Responsible for customer service" describes a job description, not your performance in it. Fix: rewrite every bullet as an outcome — "Resolved 35+ customer tickets daily with a 96% satisfaction rating."

No numbers anywhere

A resume with zero quantified results is hard to evaluate against one with several. Fix: add a number to at least one bullet per job — team size, percentage, dollar amount, time saved, volume handled.

A generic, one-size-fits-all summary

"Hard-working professional seeking new opportunities" could apply to any candidate for any job. Fix: name the specific role and one or two relevant strengths in the first two lines.

Inconsistent formatting

Mixed date formats, uneven spacing, and three different bullet styles on one page signal a document assembled in a hurry. Fix: pick one format for dates, one bullet style, and one font — and apply it everywhere.

Burying the most relevant experience

If your most relevant job is third down the page under two unrelated ones, recruiters may never reach it in a six-second scan. Fix: lead with the role most relevant to the job you're applying for, not strictly by date if that hurts relevance.

Objective statements instead of a summary

"Objective: to obtain a challenging position" tells the recruiter what you want, not what you offer. Fix: replace it with a 2–3 line professional summary focused on your value to them.

Skills sections that are just a word list

A wall of unranked skills (Excel, Teamwork, Communication...) reads as filler. Fix: group by category and lead with the ones the job posting actually asks for.

Typos and inconsistent tense

One typo can outweigh several strong bullets in a recruiter's first impression. Fix: use past tense for past roles, present tense for your current one, and read the document aloud before sending it.
