How to write a cover letter

Create résumé

A good cover letter doesn’t repeat your resume — it tells the employer why you, why them, and why now, in a few short paragraphs. Here’s a structure that works, plus an example you can adapt.

The structure (4 short paragraphs)

  1. Opening — the role you’re applying for and a one-line hook on why you’re a strong fit.
  2. Why you — one or two achievements that match what the job needs, with a number if you can.
  3. Why them — a specific reason you want this company (not a generic compliment).
  4. Close — a confident sign-off and a thank-you. Keep the whole thing under one page.

Cover letter example

Dear Hiring Manager,

I’m applying for the Customer Success Manager role at Brightline. In four years in SaaS support I’ve cut churn and built the kind of customer relationships your job description calls for — and I’d love to do it for your team.

In my current role I manage 80+ accounts and lifted renewal rates from 84% to 93% in a year by building a proactive check-in process. I’m comfortable owning targets and turning unhappy customers into advocates.

What draws me to Brightline is your focus on onboarding — it’s the stage where I’ve had the biggest impact, and where I think I can add the most value.

Thank you for considering my application. I’d welcome the chance to talk.

Sincerely, Alex Rivera

FAQ

How long should a cover letter be?

Half a page to one page — three or four short paragraphs.

Do I need a cover letter?

When the job asks for one, always include it. Even when optional, it can set you apart.

Should I address it to a person?

Use the hiring manager’s name if you can find it; otherwise “Dear Hiring Manager” is fine.
